OSHA Releases New Crane Standards
In November, the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) released new standards addressing the use of cranes and derricks in construction. The significant number of fatalities associated with the use of cranes in construction and technological advances in equipment, led the Department of Labor to undertake this rule-making.
The final rule can be found at www.osha.gov. These new standards address key hazards related to cranes on constructuion sites, including the main causes of worker death and injury. OSHA reports the main causes as electrocution, trapped under equipment, struck by equipment, and slip & falls (www.osha.gov).
There are several requirements in this new rule including: pre-erection inspection of the crane; inspection of ground conditions; procedures for working around power lines; and certification of crane operators. OSHA expects that with this new rule, 22 fatalities and 175 non-fatal injuries will be prevented each year (www.osha.gov).
